Abstract

This study explores the current landscape of data literacy education in academic libraries, analyzes how libraries equip users with data skills, identifies effective strategies for integrating data literacy instruction into the library setting, and uncovers challenges, best practices, and emerging trends in library-based data literacy programs. This study conducted a systematic literature review to analyze the role of academic libraries in data literacy education from January 2014 to January 2024. Following the PRISMA framework for rigor and transparency, we analyzed and coded selected articles to identify key themes, trends, methodologies, and findings. Three (3) major databases, such as EmeraldInsight, ProQuest, and ScienceDirect, were used to perform the literature review. The search focused on peer-reviewed articles published in English during the specified period. The study reveals that data literacy initiatives often include workshops, training programs, online resources, and collaborations with faculty and campus stakeholders. Challenges identified include resource constraints, staff training needs, and the evolving landscape of data technologies. However, opportunities exist in fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, leveraging emerging technologies, and promoting a data-informed culture. By addressing these challenges and seizing opportunities, academic libraries can empower individuals with the data literacy skills needed to succeed in the digital age. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of how academic libraries have evolved in promoting data literacy over the past decade. It highlights trends, effective practices, and challenges, fills a significant gap in the literature, and offers actionable insights for enhancing data literacy education in academic settings. This study is limited by the constraints of a systematic literature review, such as potential selection bias in the sources analyzed and the likelihood that rapidly evolving data literacy practices and technologies may outpace some findings. However, the study's implications are significant as it provides actionable insights for academic libraries to enhance data literacy education.
